Productivity carries the largest line and rests on the softest input. Forrester models 18 hours saved per employee per year at a fully burdened $34 an hour, then recaptures only 50% of it, so nothing here is removed headcount.
The support line is more traceable. Average ticket resolution falls from two hours to 15 minutes, monthly ticket rates drop from 8% of devices to 2%, and the model removes two endpoint manager roles at $115,000 each. Avoided hardware runs on two levers, not one. Chromebooks are priced below the legacy devices they replace, and Forrester stretches the replacement interval at the same time. Device management time falls 76%, cutting the staff needed for student and teacher endpoints from 25 to six.

Windows 10 reached end of support on 14 October 2025. Microsoft sells Extended Security Updates through volume licensing at $61 per device for Year One and states the price doubles every consecutive year, for a maximum of three years.
Buyers cannot purchase partial periods, and the licences are cumulative. An organisation enrolling in Year Two pays for Year One as well.

Google lists ChromeOS Enterprise Upgrade at $4.17 per device per month and the Kiosk and Signage Upgrade at $2.08, both as standalone annual purchases. Forrester’s enterprise model uses $50 per device per year for the same licence.
ESU buys critical and important security patches only. No features, no technical support. How 2026 Memory Prices Move Chromebook Total Cost Of Ownership
Omdia put the added cost of mainstream memory and storage configurations at US$90 to US$165 per PC since the first quarter of 2025. It expects a minimum 60% further rise in 1Q26.
That is a fixed dollar amount per device, not a percentage, and Omdia says the impact across PC product categories is broadly consistent. Worldwide shipments of desktops, notebooks and workstations are forecast to fall 12% to 245 million units in 2026.

Omdia’s Kieren Jessop attributes the Chrome device figure to tighter component allocation, lower margins and the discontinuation of some memory and storage products on an education-heavy platform. Jamf also cites a Township High School District 211 report: Chromebook damage at four times the iPad rate, touchscreen repair costs twice as high, a required surplus fleet of 20% against 5%, and roughly $6 more per student per year in device management.
